From OEM to Original Design: Vietnam’s Furniture Industry Takes a Strategic Step Forward at VIFA EXPO 2026

To increase added value and strengthen international competitiveness, Vietnam’s furniture industry is taking a decisive step beyond pure manufacturing.

The “Creative Interior & Exterior Furniture Products” Competition, organized within VIFA EXPO 2026, is designed to encourage Vietnamese furniture manufacturers to invest in design and originality, rather than relying solely on contract manufacturing (OEM).

The competition is jointly organized by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), industry associations, and Lien Minh Wood Handicraft JSC, as part of the broader VIFA EXPO 2026 program.

Why This Matters

For many years, Vietnam has been known as one of the world’s leading furniture manufacturing hubs — a reliable “factory of the world” producing for international brands.

While this OEM-driven model has delivered impressive export growth, it has also:

  • compressed profit margins

  • limited brand ownership

  • created heavy dependence on foreign buyers

As global markets now demand stronger design identity, sustainability, and differentiation, the pressure to move toward self-designed products and original brands has become unavoidable.

This competition is positioned as a catalyst for that transition.

According to the organizers, Vietnamese-made furniture that controls the design stage can not only improve margins, but also reposition Vietnamese companies higher in the global value chain.

Competition Scope and Participation

The competition is open to furniture manufacturers operating in Vietnam, covering a wide range of product categories, including:

  • sofas

  • tables and chairs

  • beds

  • cabinets and shelving

  • functional interior and exterior furniture

Each company may submit up to five products.

Key requirements:

  • Products must be original designs developed by the company

  • New products or items already being commercialized are eligible

  • No copied or derivative designs are allowed

Global Exposure at VIFA EXPO 2026

Products selected in the preliminary round will be exhibited at Hall B2, WTC EXPO, Bình Dương (Ho Chi Minh City) from March 7–11, 2026.

This gives participating companies a rare opportunity to:

  • showcase original designs directly to international buyers and importers

  • test market response at one of Asia’s largest furniture exhibitions

  • connect design capability with real commercial deman

Awards and Evaluation

The competition will award:

  • First Prize: VND 30 million

  • Second and Third Prizes

Final results will be determined by:

  • 50% professional jury evaluation

  • 50% community and market voting

This balanced approach ensures products are judged not only on creativity and aesthetics, but also on market relevance and commercial potential.

The submission deadline is January 31, 2026.

A Signal of Industry Maturity

More than a design contest, this initiative signals a broader shift in Vietnam’s furniture industry — from volume-driven manufacturing toward design-led, value-based competition.

As Vietnam continues to strengthen its position among the world’s top furniture exporters, initiatives like this will play a critical role in shaping the next chapter: one where “Made in Vietnam” also means designed, differentiated, and globally competitive.
