On September 29, U.S. President Donald Trump announced new import tariffs:
- 10% on sawn timber and logs
- 25% on kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, and upholstered furniture (effective Oct 14)
- From early next year: 30% on upholstered goods and 50% on cabinetry for countries without trade agreements with the U.S.
The decision, made under Section 232 of the 1974 Trade Act, cites “national security concerns,” claiming that imported wood products weaken the U.S. economy and disrupt supply chains.
This move will directly affect top suppliers to the U.S., including Canada and Mexico, while trade partners with agreements (e.g., the UK, EU, Japan) will face lower rates.
What Does This Mean for the Global Furniture Industry?
- Higher Costs for U.S. Buyers: Importers and retailers will face rising costs on raw wood and finished furniture.
- Shifts in Sourcing: Buyers may look beyond current suppliers to countries with competitive pricing, faster lead times, and flexible OEM/ODM solutions.
- Pressure on Margins: Brands may need to rethink product mixes, focusing on durable, timeless designs that justify higher retail prices.
