The Vietnamese wood and furniture industry is entering a more challenging phase in 2026.

According to recent industry data, Vietnam’s export value of wood and wood products reached approximately USD 1.55 billion in May 2026, bringing the total export turnover in the first five months of the year to USD 7.12 billion, up 4.4% compared with the same period in 2025.

The U.S. remains Vietnam’s largest market for wood and wood products, accounting for 49.2% of total export turnover. China followed with 15.2%, and Japan with 13.1%.

However, the market performance is clearly diverging.

In the first five months of 2026, exports to China increased strongly by 48.3%, while exports to Japan grew by 6%. In contrast, exports to the U.S. declined by 6.5%, showing the pressure Vietnamese wood manufacturers are facing in their most important export market.

Beyond stronger competition, trade defense measures are becoming a serious challenge. On March 11, 2026, the Office of the United States Trade Representative initiated a Section 301 investigation into imported furniture, including products from Vietnam, related to trade surplus and currency policy concerns.

For plywood products, Vietnamese exporters are currently facing anti-dumping and countervailing duties of up to 208.88%, significantly higher than the 166.93% rate applied to Indonesia. This creates real pressure on pricing, competitiveness, and long-term planning for manufacturers serving the U.S. market.

The message is clear: Vietnamese furniture exporters cannot rely on cost advantage alone.

To stay competitive, we need stronger compliance, better documentation, more transparent sourcing, stable quality control, smarter product development, and more diversified market strategies.

At the same time, there are still reasons to stay forward-looking. If international shipping routes stabilize and logistics costs ease, exports may improve in the second half of the year. The furniture industry is also approaching its peak export season from August and September, when buyers prepare for year-end demand in major markets.

At Misamex Furniture, we see this period as a reminder that resilience matters. For global buyers, choosing the right manufacturing partner is not only about price. It is about reliability, quality, compliance awareness, and the ability to adapt when the market changes.

We continue to support buyers with durable, stylish, and cost-effective OEM/ODM furniture solutions across outdoor furniture, café and restaurant sets, hotel furniture, home furniture, and custom solid wood dining chairs.
